The University for Development Studies offers a distinctive academic experience grounded in its philosophy of “Knowledge for Service.” Established in 1992, the University was founded to expand access to higher education and to support national development through practical, community-based learning. This orientation continues to define its teaching, research, and outreach activities.

UDS operates a multi-campus system with the main campus in Tamale. The University provides programmes across Pure and Applied Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Education, Engineering, Social Sciences, Law, Business, Communication and Media Studies, and Fine Arts. The University runs a trimester system that integrates classroom instruction with a compulsory Third Trimester Field Practical Programme. This model enables students to apply academic knowledge to real development challenges and to gain direct community experience.
