Student Support and Welfare

Student life at the University is shaped by a diverse community drawn from different cultural and national backgrounds. The academic environment of the University offers opportunities for learning beyond the classroom, as students share experiences and engage in social, academic, and recreational activities. The campus setting supports inclusion and provides avenues for students to build friendships, participate in clubs and associations, and adjust smoothly to university life.

International Students’ Office

The International Students’ Office operates under the Directorate of International Relations and Advancement (DIRA). The office is responsible for managing and coordinating international admissions, student welfare, and partnerships.

• Pre-arrival guidance and visa support
• Orientation for new international students
• Academic registration assistance
• Liaison with the Ghana Immigration Service
• Coordination of international students’ associations
• Support in emergencies and welfare concerns

The Directorate of International Relations and Advancement is located inside the main university administration building (Central Administration) on the Dungu campus in Tamale. The offices are situated in rooms 35 through 38.

Academic Counselling

Faculty students’ advisors assist students with academic challenges, course choices, and adaptation to the Ghanaian education system.

Psychological Support and Career Services

The University Counselling Directorate provides confidential psychological support and group therapy services. The Directorate also support students in career planning, CV preparation, and internship placements.

Health Services

The Dungu and Nyankpala campuses have health facilities, known as University Clinics. Each clinic is staffed by qualified medical personnel who provide primary healthcare services. For more advanced medical needs, students can access care at the nearby Tamale West Hospital, Tamale Central Hospital and the Tamale Teaching Hospital. All students are encouraged to register with their campus health centre upon arrival to ensure timely access to healthcare services.

Health Insurance

International students must have valid health insurance, either through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) or an approved international policy.

Vaccination and Medical Screening

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Ghana. Additional medical screening may be conducted by the University.

Personal Safety and Security

UDS provides a range of services to assist in staff and student safety, including the UDS Security Service. Students are however, urged to rely on the whole campus community to work together to support safety on campus. Students should avoid isolated areas after dark and safeguard personal belongings. Emergency contacts, including security and ambulance numbers, are provided during orientation.
