Students must apply for a Study Visa (where required) from the Ghanaian embassy or consulate in their home countries. A valid passport (minimum six months validity) and an admission letter are required.
Pre-Departure ChecklistThe main point of entry is Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Students can travel to Tamale by domestic flight (approx. 1 hour) or by road (approx. 12-14 hours). DIRA can assist with onward travel planning.
Residence PermitAll international students (studying for more than a trimester) must obtain a Residence Permit from the Ghana Immigration Service. Students studying for a trimester or less may apply for extension of stay. The International Students’ Office at DIRA will assist students with documentation and renewal. Permits are usually issued for one academic year and must be renewed before expiry. Penalties are charged for non-renewal of permits after expiration.
Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) RegistrationInternational students in Ghana must adhere strictly to the conditions of their entry and residence permits. Any change in immigration status, including switching to a work permit or another visa category, requires formal approval from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). Students are not permitted to engage in paid employment without such authorization. Violation of this provision may lead to penalties, including fines, cancellation of their residence permit, or deportation. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that their immigration status remains valid throughout their studies and to seek guidance from DIRA before initiating any application for change of status.
Legal ComplianceStudents are required to observe all laws of Ghana, including those relating to traffic, immigration, and public order. The possession, use, or distribution of narcotic or controlled substances is a serious criminal offence in the country and may result in severe legal consequences, including arrest, prosecution, and deportation. Students must also refer to the Junior members’ Handbook.
