DR. MOSES BANYEHSENIOR LECTURERDEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL CHEMISTRYSCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCESTAMALE Campus
Background
Dr Moses Banyeh is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Chemistry, School of Allied Health Sciences, University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, Ghana. A Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science, he brings together expertise in clinical chemistry, forensic science, and public health to address some of the most pressing biomedical questions facing African populations. With over a decade of frontline clinical laboratory experience and a prolific research career spanning human biology, forensic anthropology, and cardiometabolic disease, Dr Banyeh is a leading research voice within the UDS community and beyond.
Dr Banyeh holds a PhD in Chemical Pathology from the University for Development Studies (2022), an MSc in Forensic Science from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK (2013), and a BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (2006). He is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the University of Ghana (2024–2025).
Before joining academia full-time, Dr Banyeh served for nearly a decade as a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist at Tamale Central Hospital (2007–2018), giving him a strong grounding in clinical laboratory practice that continues to inform his research.
Research Interests
Dr Banyeh's research programme is broad, interdisciplinary, and deeply rooted in the Ghanaian and wider African context. His principal areas of investigation include:
Forensic Science and Forensic Anthropology
Drawing on his postgraduate training in Forensic Science (MSc, Anglia Ruskin University, UK), Dr Banyeh has developed a productive line of research in biological profiling from skeletal and morphometric measurements. His work includes the estimation of sex and stature from percutaneous long bone measurements (ulna, tibia, femur, humerus), CT-derived skeletal morphometry, fingerprint analysis, and bite mark evidence — all with reference to Ghanaian population data. Publications in this area have appeared in Forensic Science International: Reports and the Canadian Society of Forensic Science Journal.
Cardiometabolic Disease, Preeclampsia, and Reproductive Health
Dr Banyeh is an active collaborator in multi-institutional studies examining the determinants and biomarkers of cardiovascular risk, preeclampsia, and reproductive health. This includes work on stroke and cardiovascular disease burdens in Africa (in collaboration with the WHO–World Stroke Organization–Lancet Commission on Stroke), periodontal disease and cardiometabolic risk in pregnancy, and the biochemical markers of preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome.
Teaching and Supervision
Dr Banyeh is deeply committed to postgraduate and undergraduate training. He currently supervises MPhil students at UDS in areas spanning HIV pharmacology, periodontal-cardiovascular interactions, and haematological disparities. He has guided more than 40 undergraduate dissertation projects, many of which have contributed directly to his research programme in forensic anthropology and the 2D:4D ratio. He has also served as Acting Head of the Department of Haematology, School of Allied Health Sciences, UDS.
