Background

Frederick Kankam (PhD) is an Associate Professor and Head of Agricultural Biotechnology Department. He has served as Faculty Quality Assurance Coordinator, and Head of Agricultural Programmes of the Institute of Distance and Continuing Learning for the University for Development Studies. He holds PhD in Molecular Plant Pathology from Gansu Agricultural University, China. He has more than 13 years of professional experience with the University for Development Studies. He has provided instruction in Introduction to Microbiology, Introduction to Plant Pathology, and Crop Storage and Pest Management at the undergraduate level. He has also taught Microbial Biotechnology, Plant Mycology and Fungal Diseases, Plant Virology and Viral Diseases, Advanced Plant Pathology and Environmental Biotechnology at the postgraduate level. He undertakes research in the areas of Fungal and Nematode Management, Biological Control of Diseases, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Phytoalexin and Toxin Degradation. Prof. Kankam has conducted extensive plant health status research and agronomic field trials across northern Ghana and had demonstrated research capabilities evidenced by over fifty-five (>55) refereed publications. His current research foci are leafspot disease epidemics and components of resistance of some selected groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) genotypes in Ghana. He also has interest in evaluation of advanced groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) breeding lines for resistance to Aspergillus flavus infection and aflatoxin accumulation, as well as agro-ecological practices effects on productivity, insect biodiversity and ecosystem services in mango ecologies in Ghana. Prof. Kankam has been involved in international collaborative research and outreach with EU, AfDB, USAID, JIRCAS etc.
