Dr. Ammal Abukari is an Agroforester, soil scientist and sustainable land-use systems analyst. He has Doctoral training and research in agroforestry with a research focus on biochar as a soil amendment technology for the improvement of poor and degraded soils.
His research goals are closely aligned with creating a healthy environment by balancing three pillars of sustainable agriculture that is Quality of Life, Economics and the Environment. He strives to understand complex above and below-ground relationships in agro-ecosystems. The philosophy driving his research is that science should promote the well-being of small-scale farms and help farmers develop more ecologically friendly systems through alternative management practices. Since agricultural problems are neither exclusively technical nor exclusively social, he integrates both approaches in his research and its applications.
He has over forty (40) publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals and has presented at many local and international conferences. Presently a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the Department of Forestry and Forest Resources Management, University for Development Studies, Ghana. He teaches many courses including Agroforestry and Tree Physiology and supervises students at diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He serves as Seminar Coordinator and Field Trip Coordinator for the Department, as well as Farm Manager and Quality Assurance Officer for the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment. He is an Associate Editor for the Open Global Scientific Journal and a reviewer for several local and international reputable scientific journals.
