Education Minister Inaugurates New UDS Governing Council: Charges Members To Drive Innovation and Expansion

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has officially inaugurated a 15-member Governing Council for the University for Development Studies (UDS), entrusting them with the responsibility of spearheading transformational growth in infrastructure, teaching, and learning.

Chaired by Ambassador Abdulai Salifu, the newly sworn-in Council has been tasked with steering UDS into a new era of academic excellence and societal impact.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu lauded UDS for its profound contributions to the socio-economic development of Northern Ghana, particularly through its pioneering Third Trimester Field Practical Program (TTFPP).

He also commended the University for “demystifying the medical profession,” noting that before UDS introduced programmes in Medicine, Nursing, and allied health sciences, many qualified students from Northern Ghana faced barriers to entry due to geographical distance and financial constraints.

The Minister expressed optimism that UDS would soon extend its trailblazing efforts to the field of legal education. He revealed that the University is set to admit its first cohort of law students this year, marking a major milestone in broadening access to legal training in Northern Ghana.

In his acceptance remarks, Ambassador Abdulai Salifu pledged the Council’s unwavering commitment to propel UDS into a new era characterized by academic innovation, infrastructural development, and enhanced learning experiences.

The newly constituted UDS Governing Council includes the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Seidu Al-hassan; Dr. Fatimatu Iddrisu; Dr. Arnold Mashud Abukari; and Madam Magdalene Awunyeliya Kannae (Government representatives); Prof. Edmund Muonir Der and Dr. Yaa Nyarko Adjeso (representatives of Convocation - Professorial and Non-Professorial, respectively); Prof. Mamudu Abunga Akudugu (UTAG representative); Mr. Bruce Kambotuu (SRC); Mr. Mohammed Abdulai Gonazoo (GRASAG); Prof. Terry Ansah (UDS Alumni Association); Mr. Emmanuel Asampana (TEWU); Mr. Alhassan Issah Dokurugu (CHASS); and Madam Abiba Nyar (GTEC).

Together, they are expected to chart a bold and visionary path for UDS, further consolidating its role as a catalyst for regional and national development.
