10th FUSA Games: UDS Wins Bronze in Football

Mohammed Asigri and Abbas Alhassan scored a brace each and Jabbar Yussif added a fifth as the UDS football team outclassed the Makerere Business School team to seal a stylish victory to snatch bronze at the 10th All Africa University Games in Nairobi, Kenya.

This victory was for the UDS lads, a sweet revenge over their rivals who defeated them in their opening game.

The Makerere Business School side conjured something of a revival in the second half but ultimately they were sunk by an irresistible UDS performance.

Mohammed Asigri slotted in on the stroke of the 10th minutes and added a second to complete his brace on the 30th minute mark.

The Central defensive pair of UDS was called to action minutes before Mohammed Asigri's second goal, and in the melee they brought down a Makerere University striker. The referee, who was not far away from the incident, pointed to the spot. The resultant penalty kick was 1the upright and was cleared by the UDS defense.

UDS, having returned from the break with a two goal advantage, continued to press their opponents with some passes almost comparable to the world acclaimed "tiki taka" style of play.

In the 55th minute, Abass Alhassan chested down a pass, dribbled past two Makarere defenders and shot into the net to give UDS a 3 nil advantage.

A few minutes later, with some dazzling display of faultless passing between Abdul Wadud, Mohammed Asigri, Mohammed Suleiman and Gérard, Abass found himself in a good position and applied an expertly taken chipped finish to make it 4 nil.

The UDS lads had gone into the game having suffered a 3 nil defeat at the hands of the Makerere Business School at the semi finals. The team was all out for revenge given the fact that their two defeats at the tournament were at the hands of the two Ugandan Universities - Makerere University and Makerere Business School.

The Ugandans would not go down without a fight though. In the 72nd minute, a moment of miscommunication between the UDS defense, set up a Makerere Business School striker who who was in a good postion to score but goalkeeper Ganiu was ever present to prevent any comeback for the Ugandans.

UDS, the defending Champions appeared to have been angered by that attempt at goal as they took the game to the Ugandans once more. With Coach Mubashir having made some changes, taking off Muhammed suleiman  and bringing on Anane Tagoe, Abdul Wadud off for Jabbar Yussif, and Gerald off for Sherif, the UDS midfield and attack was rejuvenated.

Substitute Sherrif's first touch provided another substitute, Jabbar Yussif, with an assist and he drove the ball into the net for UDS' fifth goal.

UDS had long periods of dominance which was  reminiscent of their display in previous tournaments.

A handball in the UDS penalty area was sighted by the referee in the 78th minutes, and she pointed to the spot for the second time in the game. This time, goalkeeper Ganiu was beaten, bringing the score to 5- 1.

The stroke of full-time goal, gave some glimmer of hope to the Ugandans who hoped to get another consolation goal before the final whistle. However, the central defensive pair of Fahad and Bismark kept them at bay.

The UDS lads, by this victory, take the bronze medal for football at the 10th All Africa University Games, 2022.
