Dr. Gilbert Abotisem Abiiro is the Head of the Department of Population and Reproductive Health, and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health Services, Policy, Planning, Management and Economics, School of Public Health, University for Development Studies, Ghana.
He holds a Doctorate degree in Public Health from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and an MPH in Health Economics from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Dr. Abiiro has over ten years of research and teaching experience in public health (health policy, health economics, and health systems).
His specific research interest and experience are in health system reforms, universal health coverage, social protection, maternal health, and health insurance in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Ghana, Malawi, and Kenya. He has practical experience in the application of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research approaches including discrete choice modelling and policy analysis. He has published widely in renowned peer-reviewed journals.
He teaches Health Economics, Health Care Financing, Health Policy and Planning, and Research Methods among other courses at the University for Development Studies, Ghana. Through collaboration with other researchers, Dr. Abiiro has recently received research funding from a number of organizations including the Medical Research Council (MRC) of the United Kingdom and the African Studies Centre of the University of Michigan.
